Listen! do you smell that?

« on: March 05, 2010, 11:01:56 PM »

right, first of all, i'd like to thank everyone for their warm welcomes to this cosy corner of teh interwebz - i'll try not to upset anyone, promise!

and secondly, the reason for this post... even if it is kind of a noobish request.

my poor, long-suffering and much-abused PC has contracted some 'orrible form of malware type nastyness, called 'XP guardian 2010' im sure there are some of you who know all about this *coffcoffderekcoffcoff* but for thoses of you who dont - a brief description of my woes: this morning, upon turning on my 'puter, i wan confronted with what i at first thought was XPs securty window thing, telling me that my pc was infected with about 20 trillion nasty virus type thing, which would do all manner of unpleasent things to me (hijack my PC, steal my identity, kill my family... the usual stuff). then i noticed the title bar of the window - " xp guardian 2010 ". it was prompting me to purchase the foul little bastard to rid me of my little virus problem. now, im not alan turing, but i know enough to recognise a rouge application when i see one.

still with me? cool. not much more now...

so i tried ridding my life of XP guardian 2010 using Kaspersky. it failed. in fact, in a sense, it had failed already. i couldnt even access the internet, becaue xpg2010 was blocking firefox. at this point i noticed my network traffic moitor going mental, and pulled the network cable out of my PC (after watching the Transformers movie i like to call this 'cutting the hardline'). i called my mate chris to ask for help, and long story short, he googled it, and talked me through finding and deleting the .exe file. this also didnt work, as when i rebooted, there it was again, blocking everything, and asking me to purchase it. not a chance, i thought. i went and had a dig through thesystem registry, got scared, and ran away without doing anythig. i couldnt bring up the task manager, the add/remove software thing didnt show it, ccleaner didnt pick it up eather, and i couldnt get round it at all.

i've borrowed one of my mate chris's laptops (for he is gadget boy) and here we are. any suggestions?

TL,DR: i've got a virus and i cant shift it. help.

While we are on the subject, should I ditch Kaspersky? (it was a free subscription we got through Barclays).  Touch wood, my laptop is fine.

Snap!

I've got exactly the same problem. I've been hijacked too.

Last night Anti Virus XP 2010 landed on my desktop and now I can't go online or do anything unless I register to purchase it.
I'm a mutt head on computers so I switched it off!

I am googling it now at the library but any tips would be a great help.
